If I read my history right, the founding fathers were not overly religious. God has his place, but not in government. I grew up Catholic, but sure don't condone any religion now. The Roman Catholic Church was so corrupt, it caused the Protestant Reformation. So many different versions of Christianity, but none are followers of what Jesus taught. After all, he was Jewish. And his followers were Jewish. The only difference between Jews and early Christians, was the Jesus people believed he was the Mesiah. That's it. What does this have to do with the topic? I have now idea? That if one is going to swear allegiance to someone/something, maybe an out-of-control state is not the best first choice?

I hadn't even thought about the pledge for quite some time before this thread. I have had to think about it. And as i remember, our school class was pretty much divided on the pledge...I,d say that half of the youths stood up to recite it, the other half would not even stand up..I always stood up and recited it.....If I were to live through these times again, knowing what I do know now, I most likely would not stand up and say the pledge, in protest against A. the unnecessary overseas wars which have bankrupted our country B. the corporate take over of America C. The belief that any form of dissent or disagreement is tantamount to disloyalty....D. The use of religion or nationalism to divert and trick the people away from the real issues which plague our nation...D. the hiring of political demagogues, ie, Linbaugh, Hannity, Coulter, Crowley, Beck, who are paid many millions of dollars to convince the voters to vote against their own interests...I believe that the nation state as we once knew it no longer exists. "Countries" now are merely technicalities...The "New World Order" espoused by president GHWB in the aftermath of the first gulf war is now a reality..National boundaries mean nothing..Every "former" country, including our own USA is now part of a corporate world which cares not for its citizens.. The corporation exists only for maximum profits...American workers now compete against third world workers..Why pay decent wages over here when you can pay a Chinese worker 25 cents an hour..Those dying in overseas wars are told that they are giving their lives for our country and our freedom..Nothing is further from the truth..They die because oil companies need oil, and natural rescources from the Caspian Sea basin, which will be transferred by pipe line through Afghanistan..These days I,m pretty much disgusted with pledges, flag waving, anthems, etc..These are merely reminders of a time which no longer exists. In order to perpetuate the "Big Lie" corporations must do everything they can to control the minds of the people...Religion, Nationalism, Patriotism...THATS how they have ALWAYS done it... I like vinnies founding father quotes.and it got me thinking. Was it Upton Sinclair who once said " When fascism comes to America it will be carrying a cross and be wrapped in a flag".... Well any hows, its here now, no doubt about it..

There is alot of truth to what Muc has said. Bob too. Corporations have taken over and run the world. But, we as Americans, say the pledge for each other. At least I do. And being a Vet, it has a special meaning for me. I'm sure not all Vets feel the same, but, what the hell. That's the way I feel. The one great thing about our flag, is it gives you the freedom to think, feel and say the things you want.
