Eric,
We've all seen examples of people or bands that sell out their rock and roll souls in hopes of getting that proverbial fame and fortune. They get to a point where sales aren't happening, the concert halls are getting smaller, the merchandise ain't selling any more, etc.
They bleach their hair, they "radio-ize" the band and songs, and act like little pussies in order to sell more records. We've seen it for the past, what...60 years or so, in the industry.
My question is: was there ever a point of weakness where you you had to think long and hard about going down a similar road? You've always carried a standard in this business which I've used as a model for personal ethics (yes, you) when it comes to sacrificing success for maintaining professional integrity. In other words, I can only think of a few others that stuck with their guns through the hard times- people like Lemmy, Ace Frehley, Joey DeMaio, etc. You and others have always stuck to your guns in the face of pressures of the industry to puss out.
They never changed, never compromised, and never fell victim to change in order to gain things they couldn't when being themselves. Personally, I thank each of you.
But yeah, I guess everyone questions where they are and where they are going at some point. Did you ever have to actually struggle with decisions like that or was it always a hard and fast decision to drive on as normal no matter the consequences?
Thanks man.
